- In a medium bowl, gently combine the sliced strawberries with 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar (if using). Allow to rest and macerate while preparing the waffle batter.
- Preheat your heart-shaped waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until thoroughly combined.
- In a separate bowl, lightly beat the large eggs. Incorporate the whole milk, melted and cooled unsalted butter, and pure vanilla extract, mixing until well blended.
- Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir just until combined, being careful not to overmix. A few small lumps are acceptable.
- Lightly grease the preheated waffle iron with a nonstick spray or a brush of melted butter. Ladle the prepared batter onto the hot iron (adjusting quantity based on your specific waffle maker) and cook according to the manufacturer's directions until golden brown and crisply cooked. Repeat with the remaining batter.
- While the waffles are cooking, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract until soft peaks begin to form.
- To serve, artfully arrange the freshly cooked waffles on individual plates. Generously top with the macerated strawberries and a dollop of the freshly whipped cream. Lightly dust with additional powdered sugar, if desired.
